Protects folders and files from read and write access attempts.
Pumpernickel (FIDES, FIle and Directory Enhanced Security) is a kernel mode driver that enables you to detect access attempts relating your files and folders. For example you can limit access to typical document files and can ensure that they can only be opened using the registered application. For example: .doc/.docx files can only be opened using Microsoft Word, .jpg, .png, .gif files can only be opened by IrfanView or Adobe Photoshop, etc. Thus Pumpernickel can help to mitigate against ransomware attacks or spyware/trojans that try to access your document files. But Pumpernickel also helps to fight exploits and malware actions from Browsers and Media-Players if configured correctly. There is even more: you can also just use Pumpernickel/FIDES as an active honeypot, turning every Windows PC into an active probe. Just set it up to monitor some honeypot files and folders you have placed onto your machine. These files and folders are not meant to be used by you or anyone else. If Pumpernickel/FIDES spots any activity on them you definitely know something wrong is going on, so you can fire countermeasures at an early stage of an attack whether be it just a new ransomware campaign or a dedicated APT targeting your site. This can be highly beneficial for 0-day attack detection and an essential part of your mitigation strategy.
Pumpernickel (FIDES) can be installed within a few seconds. In addition, our solution works fully transparent in the background, there is no interaction required. Recognized attacks are logged and can be analyzed later. We implemented no black-box design, you can fully peek into the logs and process them as you want and regarding your needs. For example you can install a watchdog to collect and summarize the log files from all your end-points and can turn each and every Windows client into an active attack detection probe.
Please note: Network drives cannot be protected using Pumpernickel, as Pumpernickel is only able to protect physical local drives and devices. A network drive by definition is not part of your physical computer and thus is managed by the server who runs the network attached device.
Pumpernickel (FIDES) is ideal for use in centrally administered environments, such as in kiosk systems, business, point-of-sale (POS) systems, libraries, schools, or universities. Pumpernickel (FIDES) is also suitable for analyzing and protecting offline systems like production plants, as no internet connection is required.
